What is its purpose?
The PSU or power supply unit provides the power to the system in order for it to work.
How is it used within a computer system?
The PSU is used to power all of the components .
How does it connect?
It connects to the motherboard via a 20+4 pin atx and a 4 or an 8 pin atx. The PSU also connects to any of the drives and ODDs with an SATA power. And anything else connects to the PSU via molex connectors
Cost?
Depending on the brand, PSUs can vary from £20 - £100 ish but you don’t want to cheap out with power supplies because they are more prone to failing,
Brands?
The main brands for PSUs are Corsair, OCZ, and cooler master.
Speed/Capacity?
PSU are measured in watts e.g. 500w and 750w. The higher the wattage the more it can handle in the computer.
Models / varieties/ types?
There aren’t really models and varieties of PSUs because they are all pretty much the same apart from brands and wattage, however there are different types there is the non-modular, the semi-modular and the modular power supply.
Compatibility issues?
There aren’t any compatibility issues with a PSU apart form if you have a micro AYX power supply and want to use it in a ATX mother board you will struggle to get it to reach.
