How does it connect?
Typically a hard drive would connect to the motherboard via a SATA (serial ATA) connector, A SATA cable can transfer data faster than is older counterpart IDE(integrated drive electronics) which the top of the range could transfer 133MBps where the as its newer counterpart SATA has 3GBps transfer rate. |
Cost
A high end hard drive would cost £120, with this price you are more guaranteed that your hard drive is not going to fail, it also offers faster rpm and higher storage capacities such as 1-2TB ( TB= Terra byte) A low end Hard drive would cost about £15 and you have a bigger chance that it will fail and lower rpm and storage capacities such as 10GB-80GB ( GB= Giga bytes) |
Speed/Capacity?
Hard dives come in a variety of different storage capacities and rpm speeds, at typical note book rpm is about 5400 whereas the typical desktop HDD rpm is about 7500. HDDs also come in different sizes; 10-80GB 250GB 500GB 750GB 1TB 2TB 3TB |
Brands?
The most notable brands for hard drives are western digital, Samsung, Hitachi, Seagate, etc. these brands are more well know and are more reliable, when it comes to hard drives don’t cheap out. |
Models / varieties/ types?
there are many different brands of HDD and there are a few different types, the most notable brands are seagate and western digital. the different types of HDD are 2.5inch drive and 3.5inch drive. 2.5inch include SSDs. |
Compatibility issues?
the problms with compatability for HDDs is that you cant connect an IDE HDD with a SATA cable and vise versa. |
