GPU( Graphical Processing Unit)
What is its purpose?
The GPU changes digital data from the OS and other programs to signals usable by the monitor. How does it connect?
The GPU connects on the motherboard via a PCI express X16 slot, some GPUs need additional so they will need to be connected to the PSU. Brands?
There are two main brands for GPUs they are AMD and Nvidia, now these arent manufactres but they are the brand of GPU e,g there can be an asus Nvidia GTX 660 and a asus 7870 HD Radeon Models / varieties/ types?
As stated above there are two main brands but each have many different types, models and varieties e.g. Asus GTX 890 and the EVGA Titan. |
How is it used within a computer system?
The GPU is used to change digital data into signals that can be displayed on the monitor Cost?
A very low end Nvidia GT 210 will cost about £20 where as a higher end Nvidia GTX 690 will cost about £780 and a Nvida Titan will cost £900-£1000. An AMD Radeon HD 5450 will cost about £20 and the highest end AMD card costs about AMD Radeon HD 7990 £900 Speed/Capacity?
grapichs cards have a clock speeds like a CPU but they also have RAM called VRAM, most modern GPUs will have GDDR5 RAM this is normally about 1GB to 6GB Compatibility issues?
If the power supply of the computer doesn't have enough wattage it will blow out the power supply, also if there ins't a PCI express slot on the Motherboard the GPU wont work. |
