Configuring a computer
There are multiple ways to configure a computer for a person who has no health problems or a small child or even a partially blind person, the possibilities are endless. The requirements for a partially blind person are for them to be able to see what is on the screen, and use the computer efficiently.
To configure a computer for a partially blind adult you can, make the icons on the desktop larger to make it easier for them to read, you can do this by right clicking on the desktop and going to view and clicking on the icon size you desire, this will help the user see what application they are clicking on.

While making the icons bigger allows the person to see the icons better it doesn’t allow them to see other things like text to help with this you used the magnifier, this magnifies around the cursor so the user can see what their cursor is pointing at zoomed in, the user can change the magnification level to suit their need, the magnifier can be found in the start menu, under accessibility. Another way to make it easier for someone who finds it hard to read text on screen is to make the font size bigger, this can be done in the font’s folder in the control panel, this will help the user to be able to read the text on the screen a bit easier. You can also get a narrator program; this reads out all the text on the screen, this is useful if the user is still having trouble with reading, what the narrator does is reads out any text on the screen and it will also say if there is any buttons on the screen to click. The user can change how fast the speaker speaks and can change the voice to suit them in the settings screen for the narrator.
If the user struggles to read on black and white you can change the screen to high contrast mode this makes it easier for the user to see things as it makes it white on black and changes any other colour to suit the new theme. To do this you can do it via a keyboard shortcut by pressing left Shift+ Left Alt+ Print screen, or you can go to the control panel and go into the accessibility menu and check the high contrast check box.
A way you can configure a computer physically is to make sure that the monitor is placed at a nice height so that the user doesn’t have to look down or up, this will help the user because they will get a clear view of the screen, to do this depends on the monitor in question, if the monitor can slide up and down you can slide it up and down until you find the right height, if the monitor is stationary you could use books or any other objects you have to hand to help boost the monitor up. If the monitor is too high when you haven’t changed anything you could adjust your chair to suit the monitor’s height.
The background lighting can also play a part in configuring a computer for a partially blind person, because some people may find it difficult to see in a monitor in a dark room, or in a room with low light. To make the light level okay the user will have to get some desk lamps to light the room up to a level that they like and a level that they can see fine. This will help the user because it will enable them to see the keyboard easier and see the monitor easier. To help the user to type easier on the computer they could get a braille keyboard cover so that it goes over the keyboard, so that they know what keys they are pressing of they struggle to read the letters on the keyboard, you can get these on amazon for £50. Another way you could configure a computer for a partially sighted person is to get a bigger mouse so that it is easier for them to see where it is and where the left and right click are, you can get these at amazon for about £20.
